OSRC BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Conference Committee Report

In an attempt to save money, it was decided to provide sweet rolls only the first morning of the meeting. Chips and salsa and a no-host bar will be served at the chili cook-off. If the budget allows, more food will be offered at the Thursday lunch break in an effort to get participants into the vendor's area.
The BOD meetings will be Tuesday evening before the meeting at 1800 and Friday 1245-1400.
There was a motion "that the winners of the Sputum Bowl will be given prizes. If they go to the national Sputum Bowl they will be given $200 per person. If they do not use the money it will be placed into a fund for future use." It was seconded and passed.
Dates for Washington State annual conference are April 28 and 29, 2002.

It was moved "that the OSRC support the AARC disaster relief program by placing a container for donations at the AARC booth". It was seconded and passed. Cindy Harris will take care of jar placement. Volunteers formed a by-laws committee to review the OSRC by-laws. Norman Kerr was appointed chairperson. Other committee members are Marilyn Barclay, Chris Sorenson, Marie Keyes, and Jennifer Freeman.
An agenda item for next meeting will be a decision to formalize a split of the Central Region.
PACT Report
COPD education month was cancelled due to Sept 11 attack. It is scheduled for next October.
Joe D. offered information about Medicare audits and tobacco legislation.
Regional Directors Reports

Peace Health is providing PFT services and Better Breather club to the Cottage Grove hospital. Cottage Grove is in the process of building a new hospital. Sacred Heart has positions open. They had a good response from ad placement in the Advance.
Salem Hospital continues to expand. They celebrated the 1st anniversary of the redesign project. The RC department began using four protocols on November 1st. They also changed configuration of the department separating critical care and floor staff. They recently added bronchoscopy and ABG draws to their list of tasks. They hope to have a new NICU open April 2003.
Southern Director
Ki R. reported a phone list problem for the Southern Region. He will make corrections for the OSRC web page.
Ashland has a position open. They have been very busy.
Three Rivers Community Hospital passed joint accreditation and did very well. They also received an 8% raise for their RRT staff, bringing the wage rate in line with other area hospitals.
Merle West is remodeling and thinking of a single patient room design. The RC department is now doing bronchs in the CCU.
Lakeview is keeping their two therapists busy. Their manager is now heading the risk management team.
Rogue Valley is building two 7-story nursing towers with over 400 beds. They are also doubling the size of the ED. The department formed an employee morale team and has had great success in improving attitudes. Therapists have received a wage increase and a position is open the NICU. The pre operative pulmonary screening program for cardiac patients has been such a success that it is to be expanded to all pre-surgical patients.
Eastern Region

Northwest Region
Larry P. reported that Adventist Hospital's health fair in Pioneer Square was such a success that he is going to ask other Portland area hospitals to become involved next year. Larry P. also spoke with Steve Dunn from KATU about having information on respiratory care on AM Northwest. He was told that they are always looking for story ideas but need several months lead.
118 people earned CEUs at the OHSU Trends Conference in October.
Legislative Affairs
There is a bill before the state legislature that would mandate that only Respiratory Therapist may carry unlabeled respiratory medications outside the hospital setting. The pharmacy board is supporting this bill.
The Health Licensing Office now has education program links on their web page. The HDLP only mail the annual newsletter the rest of the newsletters will be available on the web page.
If people are unsure of position statements for procedures, contact the HDLP.
A physician is needed for the licensing board.
The HDLP meeting is scheduled for the week following the OSRC meeting. It was suggested that the meeting be held during the OSRC conference on Friday along with the workshops. The HDPL will have a booth in the vendor section.
The next board meeting will take place Feb 5, the evening before the first day of the OSRC convention.
